Prerequisites:
ENG – Must meet one of the following:

Writing placement
Earned “A” grade in ENG 090 Fundamentals of College Writing

DVS – Must meet one of the following:

Reading placement
Successful completion of CRE 101 College Reading 2 OR CRE 103 Advanced College Reading & Study Skills
Concurrently enrolled in CRE 101 College Reading 2 OR CRE 103 Advanced College Reading & Study Skills (co-requisite)

EAL (If applicable):

Successful completion of EAL 100 EAL Composition and EAL 101 EAL Reading 2

Co-requisites: CRE 101 OR CRE 103 (if required) must be taken concurrently, if not successfully completed prior to enrolling in ENG 101.

Description
This course introduces students to college-level, academic writing. Emphasis is placed on critical analysis, argumentation, intellectual honesty and revision. Through the writing process, students refine arguments; develop and support ideas; investigate, evaluate, and integrate appropriate sources; revise and edit for effective style and usages; and develop an awareness of the variety of contexts, audiences, and purposes of academic writing. Students produce five to seven reading-based, multi-paragraphed argumentative essays of increasing difficulty, totaling 15-20 pages for the semester.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

Create strong thesis statements that are arguable, specific and grounded in critical thinking and analysis.
Present written arguments that follow a cohesive and coherent organizing structure.
Synthesize and integrate text-based evidence in order to support claims.
Examine the influence of cultural context, assumptions and underlying bias of sources.
Revise drafts for clarity, logical consistency and cohesion.
Apply appropriate formatting and citation standards to written work.
