Description
This course is designed as a survey of the political, economic and social developments of European Civilization from the Renaissance to the end of the twentieth century.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Identify the trends and forces that led to the development of a modern world-view.
- Compare and contrast the political and constitutional development of Britain and continental Europe.
- Explain the intellectual concepts of the Enlightenment.
- Describe the causes and results of the French Revolution.
- Explain the rise of industrialism and capitalism and the challenges of and responses to liberalism, socialism and Marxism.
- Explain the role of nationalism in the formation of major nations in the late 19th century.
- Describe the causes and results of World War I.
- Identify the causes and results of the Russian Revolution.
- Explain the causes of World War II and the issues of the Cold War.
