ITP 105 - Introduction to Interpreting Credits: 3 3 Skills Lab Hours
Description This course provides students with an overview of the sign language interpreting field. The history and development of sign language interpreting are explored, along with trends and issues in the field. Various service models of interpreting are discussed. Laws governing the provision of interpreting services in the state of Pennsylvania are addressed, along with issues pertaining to qualifications and certifications. There is a minimum of 10 hours of interpreting observations for this course that may require students to have appropriate clearances. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Explain the historical development of the field of sign language interpreting.
- Describe service models of interpreting (Helper, Machine/Conduit, Communication Facilitator, Bilingual/Bicultural Mediator, Ally).
- List the steps required to become a registered interpreter in PA, as well as be able to discern the different types of registration.
- Identify settings where interpreters work and the specialized skills required for each.
- Articulate the role, function and responsibilities of the interpreter.
