SOC 211 - Racial and Ethnic Minorities Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Description This course will investigate the construction of the social categories of race and ethnicity. Discussion will revolve around the history, process and effects of these constructions. A major focus will be on interracial and interethnic relations in the United States. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Define basic terminology such as competition, conflict segregation stratification and assimilation accommodation.
- Compare and contrast first contact in North America and the subsequent reactions between natives and foreigners.
- Apply the concepts of diversity and multiculturalism to daily life and critical thinking/problem solving.
- Appraise the future of ethnicity in the United States.
- Contrast characteristics of specific groups such as Native American Indians, African Americans and Latinos.
- Discuss experiences of being a member of a minority
- Discuss human rights issues from a national and global perspective.
