BIO 121 - Ecology and Sustainability

Description
This course allows students to explore ecology and ecosystems while developing an understanding of sustainable systems.  Students evaluate the continually changing nature of ecosystems and discuss factors that impact ecosystem survival.  Biological system are investigated from an environmental, economic and equity (social justice) point of view. Students learn to critically evaluate these environmental concepts when considering personal, business and community issues.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Define the principles of ecology.
  2. Explain the importance of the environment to evolution, natural selection and the maintenance of biodiversity.
  3. Identify the physical, biological and behavioral factors that influence an organism’s ability to grow and reproduce in its habitat.
  4. Illustrate energy flow in ecosystems, including photosynthesis, trophic levels and biomass pyramids from an ecological perspective.
  5. Analyze a variety of current environmental issues in light of their ecological, social, economic and ethical/cultural implications. 
  6. Summarize basic sustainability issues surrounding air quality, water availability, food and agriculture, energy and shelter.
  7. Identify causes of global climate change and its impact on the biosphere.
  8. Assess the roles of technology and behavior modification when looking for sustainability solutions.
  9. Describe the challenges that population growth introduces for resolving sustainability issues.
