BIO 151 - General Biology 1


Credits: 4
3 Lecture Hours 3 Lab Hours

Prerequisites: Eligibility for ENG 101  and MAT 108  and BIO 110  with a grade of “C” or higher. Alternatively, students can opt to take the BIO 110  Waiver Exam to fulfill the prerequisite by scoring at least a 70.

 
Description
This course introduces students to atomic structure, important bioorganic molecules, enzymes, cellular structure and function, cellular reproduction, genetic principles and biotechnology. Selected topics include an overview of cellular biochemistry, with emphasis on cellular respiration and photosynthesis. The accompanying laboratory program allows students to practice scientific procedures by conducting investigations which are coordinated with lecture topics. This course transfers to most four-year institutions. 


Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Perform an experiment and collect data to test the validity of a hypothesis.
  2. Explain the structure of an atom and the nature of atomic bonds.
  3. Describe the fundamental life sustaining properties of water.
  4. Identify the four major classes of biomolecules and their importance to biological systems.
  5. Summarize the structure and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including organelles, membrane transport and cellular metabolism.
  6. Explain basic enzyme structure and function.
  7. Compare and contrast the processes of mitosis and meiosis.
  8. Explain the structure and function of DNA, including DNA replication, transcription and translation.
  9. Apply the principles of Mendelian genetics and predict the transmission and inheritance of traits.
  10. Summarize the processes of cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
