HPE 171 - Personal and Community Health and Wellness Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Description This course provides an overview of personal and community health and wellness. Students explore wellness and lifestyle concepts through active learning experiences. Topics include, but are not limited to: fitness, nutrition, sexuality, smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, stress and emotional wellness. Student participation in class activities assists the formulation of an individualized wellness plan. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Develop a philosophy for health and wellness responsibility.
- Define contemporary issues in wellness such as exercise and fitness, nutrition, weight control, stress management and substance abuse.
- Describe strategies used for health and wellness awareness and behavior change.
- Develop a plan to implement an individualized program of wellness that is both informative and directed towards the reduction of health risks in the lifestyle.
- Implement a health and wellness plan by creating goals and tracking progress toward improved lifestyle habits.
