HPE 193P - Practicum in Health and Physical Education Credits: 3 2 Lecture Hours 50 Practicum Hours
Description In this hands-on course, students gain valuable experience by participating directly in a community, school, healthcare or after-school program under the guidance of professionals. Students relate life skill goals to the organizational structure and provide leadership onsite to help achieve program goals. They describe the philosophy and objectives of their placement organization to their instructor, focusing on how it serves community members and special populations.
Through their practicum, students develop strategies to motivate and support others. They research and list reference materials relevant to their program area. Additionally, students analyze cultural and diversity considerations for effectively developing and participating in community services. Upon completion, students understand how to apply skills from this course to further personal and professional development in service-focused roles. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Relate life skill goals within the organizational structure.
- Provide leadership at site/location.
- Describe philosophy and program goals to the instructor of community organizations and special populations.
- Develop a strategy to use placement in future personal concepts including motivational techniques.
- List reference materials in related programs.
- Analyze cultural and diversity issues in developing or participating in community programs.
