HPE 201 - Applied Anatomy/Kinesiology

Credits: 3
3 Lecture Hours

Prerequisites: BIO 110  or BIO 151

Description
In this course, students study the structures of the human body with special emphasis on the skeletal, muscular, cardiorespiratory and nervous systems. Basic principles of kinesiology concerning the analysis of human motion are also included.  Students explore the movements and functions of the skeletal muscle system.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Examine the skeletal and muscular systems by identifying their major components and describing key functions.
  2. Examine the cardiovascular and respiratory systems by identifying their major components and explaining key functions.
  3. Describe basic concepts related to the nervous systems.
  4. Define specific relationships between body systems.
  5. Identify the actions of major muscle groups.
  6. Demonstrate exercises to enhance the strength of specific muscle groups.
  7. Explain the relationships between muscle group functions and example exercises.
  8. Define specific joint movements including supination, pronation, flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, hyperextension, rotation and circumduction.
  9. Describe the structure and nature of movement in the major joints of the body.
  10. Describe biomechanical principles that underlie the performance of various exercise and sport activities.
