MAT 191 - Mathematics for the Industries


Credits: 3
3 Lecture Hours

Prerequisites: MAT 080  (minimum grade “C”) or successful placement.
 
Description
In this course, students gain practical mathematical skills for industrial careers. Through problem solving, students learn operations with numbers, polynomials and algebraic techniques to solve linear and quadratic equations. Measurement systems, ratio and proportion, graphing, geometry formulas and trigonometric functions are applied to technical problems. Students analyze real-world scenarios through technology-based math challenges. Students gain problem-solving skills that have direct career relevance for fields like manufacturing, construction and logistics. This course is not intended for any transfer degree program.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Perform operations with signed numbers, powers and roots.
  2. Perform operations involving scientific notation and the metric system.
  3. Perform basic algebraic operations with polynomials.
  4. Solve linear and quadratic equations.
  5. Solve right triangles.
  6. Compute perimeter and area for quadrilaterals and triangles.
  7. Compute surface area and volume for various geometric figures such as prisms, cylinders, pyramids and spheres.
  8. Analyze real world applications involving ratio, proportion and variation problems.
