HIT 206 - Legal Aspects of Health Information

Description
The course presents students with a comprehensive study of the legal aspects of health records and health information. Topics include an introduction to fundamentals of law and the U.S. legal system, health information laws and regulations, confidentiality, privacy and security concepts and release of information policies and procedures. Students also examine ethical issues in health information management. This course requires a per credit health career fee; Check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.


Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Explain the federal and state court systems and the legal process.
  2. Identify legal issues related to ownership, control and confidentiality of health information.
  3. Apply policies and procedures with regard to access, requests and disclosure of health information.
  4. Identify administrative, physical and technical safeguards that ensure health data and system security.
  5. Evaluate core health information ethical problems including those related to privacy and confidentiality, compliance, fraud and abuse, Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and medical identity theft.
