Description This course is an in-depth study of Western art music from antiquity until 1750. It traces the development of music’s aural traditions and notational systems by exploring composers and their compositions. Students examine musical form, practice and style. Contemporaneous developments in Western cultures and societies are examined for context. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Summarize Western art music’s origin and development through 1750.
- Compare various musical forms from antiquity to the Baroque period.
- Identify important composers and compositions by name through listening.
- Examine the place of music within the arts and humanities of Western civilization.
- Examine the relationship between music history and historical events in Western cultures.
