PSY 106 - Psychology of African Americans Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Description This course presents the psychological principles shaping the personality of African Americans. The course includes a critique of the applicability of theories and measures across societal and culture gropus such as “traditional” statistics, racial myths, discriminatory thinking and behavior. Analysis of attitudes and behaviors which develop in non-prejudiced and prejudicial socio-economic, educational and political systems and ways to counteract them are reviewed. This course emphasizes proactive African-American leadership and the lifestyle of individual African Americans and their community. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Define appropriate theoretical and research approaches dealing with psychological assumptions about African-American personality.
- Compare and contrast the effects of historical and current social/cultural events on African-American personality.
- Analyze the effects of proactive African-American religious, philosophical, economic and political initiatives.
- Summarize the processes and effects of discriminatory thinking and behavior.
- Define ethical principles of research.
- Compare the ethics of ethnocentrism by racial or ethnic group.
