SOC 160 - Introduction to Women’s Studies

Description
This course is an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of women’s and gender studies. Students explore a range of topics including the ethical, legal, medical and religious issues impacting women’s lives, as well as the impact of gender socialization on such things as politics, culture and language. Students examine these issues through intersectional approaches that recognize the diversity of experiences, cultural milieux and structural conditions that shape women’s lives.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Explain ethical, legal, medical/biological and religious issues in women’s lives.
  2. Describe parameters that differentiate experiences of women and men in areas like socialization, politics, culture and language.
  3. Analyze how gender influences socialization, societal roles and structures related to areas such as education, careers, families and social patterns.
  4. Discuss methods used for research in the emerging field of women’s and gender studies.
  5. Evaluate perspectives on gender issues and ongoing work toward equality in legal and policy arenas.
