SPA 101 - Elementary Spanish 1 Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Prerequisites: Eligibility for ENG 101L and CRE 103
Description In this course, students learn to develop communicative proficiency in Spanish through an integrated approach incorporating all four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammatical structures, vocabulary and readings are presented as tools for students to develop strong communication abilities. Additionally, students explore and gain awareness of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. An emphasis is placed on providing opportunities for practicing pronunciation and conversation to advance listening and speaking skills. Readings allow students to enhance comprehension while writing assignments give practice communicating in Spanish. Students improve their proficiency in comprehending and using Spanish through an approach that develops all language areas. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Integrate linguistic and cultural understanding of the Spanish language to effectively apply Spanish vocabulary, grammar, and cultural awareness in diverse situations.
- Translate level-appropriate material.
- Write simple sentences in Spanish.
- Communicate at a basic level in Spanish.
- Use a low-mid novice level vocabulary both in and out of the classroom.
- Identify the difference between Spanish and English grammar.
- Compare and contrast cultural differences among Spanish speaking countries.
