Description
In this course, students study plays which illustrate the effect of modern psychology on the development of drama in the 20th century. Dramatic realism and naturalism, expressionism, surrealism and absurdism are examined. Students learn about these different movements and how they influenced playwriting. The course provides students with a survey of dominant contemporary trends in theatre over the last century.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Define the dramatic styles developed in the 20th Century.
  2. Analyze plays of each time period in the 20th Century.
  3. Determine how modern drama mirrors society and how the theater can impact our experiences.
  4. Identify the role of technology as each dramatic style developed.
  5. Analyze playwrights in each genre.
  6. Contrast styles of contemporary drama in a reading/production environment.
