ALH 106 - Basic Life Support

Description
This is a course in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers. Students learn background information about heart disease and risk factors for cardiac arrest. One- and two-rescuer adult and pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are taught as well as foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) management. Students receive certification from the American Heart Association. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. List background information on cardiorespiratory anatomy and physiology under normal and dysfunction periods.
  2. Explain the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and actions for survival.
  3. Perform the following skills according to the AHA guidelines: (a) Adult and pediatric one- and two rescuer CPR (b) Bag-mask and mouth-to-mask ventilation (c) Adult and pediatric foreign body FBAO management (d) Use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  4. Demonstrate competency by scoring a minimum of 84% in written evaluations.
  5. Achieve certification in BLS for Healthcare Providers from the AHA.
