ALH 140 - Medical Terminology

Description
This course offers a comprehensive study of the professional language of medicine. Students develop proficiency in word construction, pronunciation, spelling, definition and the use of terminology across various medical science disciplines, hospital services and health-related professions. Emphasis is placed on recognizing and analyzing the components of medical terms such as prefixes, suffixes, combining vowels and roots. Through a focus on anatomy, pathology, surgical procedures, diagnostic procedures and symptoms, students gain a foundational understanding of medical terminology and its practical application in healthcare settings.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Identify prefixes, suffixes, combining vowels and roots found within medical terms.
  2. Define medical terms applicable to anatomy, physiology, pathology, procedures and symptomatology.
  3. Spell medical terms correctly related to anatomy, physiology, pathology, procedures and symptomatology.
  4. Pronounce medical terms accurately for anatomy, physiology, pathology, procedures and symptomatology.
  5. Employ common abbreviations used in healthcare contexts.
  6. Translate medical terminology into layperson’s terms and convert laypersons’ descriptions into medical terminology.
  7. Utilize medical vocabulary appropriate for a professional healthcare setting when communicating orally and in writing.
  8. Analyze unfamiliar medical terms by separating them into recognizable word components to determine their meaning and context.
  9. Synthesize knowledge of medical word components to construct new or unfamiliar complex medical terms.
  10. Evaluate the comprehension and effectiveness of medical terminology used in oral or written professional communications for intended audiences.
