CJC 101 - Introduction to Criminal Justice Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Description This course is a study of crime, societal reaction to crime and the components of the criminal justice system, law enforcement, the courts and corrections. The student is introduced to the philosophical and historical backgrounds as well as their purposes and functions of each component. The major theories of crime causation, control and rehabilitation of the offender are discussed. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Identify the structure of the criminal justice system.
- Identify the major components of the criminal justice system and their purposes.
- Describe the history and development of the American criminal justice system.
- Evaluate various models of criminal justice and consider the impact each has on those employed in the system and those processed through the system.
- Identify important sources of crime statistics and explain their importance.
- Summarize the trends in crime in the United States.
- Identify issues related to the administration of justice in the United States, for example, plea bargaining, police misconduct and punishment of offenders.
- Discuss the tension between public safety and civil liberties and the role that the criminal justice system plays in these opposing and important goals.
