DMS 239 - Abdominal OB-GYN/Cardiac Ultrasound Credits: 4 3 Lecture Hours 2 Lab Hours
Prerequisites: DMS 207 , DMS 210 , DMS 235C Co-requisites: DMS 237C
Description This course provides ultrasound students specializing in vascular ultrasound with foundational knowledge and skills for abdominal/OB/GYN and cardiac sonography. Anatomy and basic physiology of the abdominal organs, female pelvis, pregnancy and heart are reviewed and correlated with their sonographic characteristics. Scanning techniques of the abdominal organs, female pelvis and heart are presented and practiced in the lab. Relevant histological aspects in common pathological conditions of the abdomen and heart are discussed and correlated with their acoustical properties and sonographic characteristics. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the abdominal, female pelvic, fetal and cardiac organs.
- Identify the clinical symptoms and laboratory values appropriate for disease processes of specific organs of the abdomen, female pelvis and heart.
- Identify the normal sonographic characteristics of the abdomen, female pelvis, fetus and heart.
- Describe the ultrasound appearance of common pathological diseases in the abdominal organs and heart.
- Demonstrate basic scanning techniques to safely obtain diagnostic images of abdominal organs, female pelvis and heart during relevant laboratory exercises.
- Apply proper scanning technique to perform basic fetal biometry imaging.
Listed Topics
- Normal sonographic characteristics of the organs within the abdomen, female pelvis, fetus and heart
- Basic physiology of the abdominal organs, female pelvic organs, pregnancy and heart
- Common pathology of the abdominal organs, female pelvic organs, pregnancy and heart
- Scanning techniques of the abdomen, female pelvis, pregnancy and heart
Reference Materials Textbooks, library resources and ultrasound journals located in the DMS lab. Students who successfully complete this course acquire general knowledge, skills and abilities that align with CCAC’s definition of an educated person. Specifically, this course fulfills these General Education Goals: - Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
- Quantitative & Scientific Reasoning
