THE 170 - Stage Combat 1: Unarmed Techniques

Description
In this course, students learn the fundamental techniques and principles of safe and effective unarmed theatrical stage combat. Coursework trains the student actor to recognize safe partnering and execution of falls, strikes, blocks and grappling for the performance of theatrical works including physical conflict. Students are expected to work in close physical proximity alongside other participants in the course. A final exam consisting of the performance of choreographed work is required.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Perform fundamental unarmed stage combat techniques.
  2. Demonstrate safe falls to the ground in a choreographed and controlled fashion.
  3. Identify safety elements embedded within unarmed stage combat choreography.
  4. Evaluate angles to optimize audience sight lines during unarmed stage combat.
  5. Perform fight choreography with a scene partner.
  6. Incorporate expressive character choices into choreography.
  7. Collaborate effectively with classmates and scene partners.
  8. Incorporate scene direction and constructive criticism.
  9. Describe physical techniques and footwork accurately.
