BAS 130 - Building Automation Systems Networking

Credits: 3
3 Skills Lab Hours

Prerequisites: CIT 115

Description
This course is a comprehensive course aligned with CompTIA’s Network+ Certification covering modern networking which includes fundamentals, industry standards, open systems interconnection (OSI) model, IP protocol, signal transmission, media types and network topologies. The course aims to provide understanding of network hardware for effective operation and explores Building Automation System (BAS) networks, emphasizing protocols like BACnet, LonWorks, Niagara N4 and Modbus. The structure includes lectures and labs for a balanced learning environment with real-world scenarios and hands-on activities to apply theoretical knowledge practically.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Describe network principles, terminology, standards and the OSI model’s significance.
  2. Apply knowledge of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocols, including Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) addressing.
  3. Analyze signal transmission and media types, considering their suitability for diverse contexts.
  4. Explain the impact of cabling standards on network infrastructure and protocols.
  5. Identify essential network hardware components and their functions.
