MAS 220 - Massage Therapy Seminar Credits: 1 1 Lecture Hours
Prerequisites: MAS 110 or PTA 101 ; MAS 111 or BIO 160 or BIO 175 or BIO 241 ; MAS 201 Description This course serves as a comprehensive review and transition for students preparing to become Licensed Massage Therapists (LMTs). Students consolidate their academic knowledge in key areas, including massage and bodywork assessment, business and professionalism, benefits and effects of massage, contraindications and precautions, anatomy and physiology, kinesiology and pathology as they prepare for the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx). The course also covers essential professional topics such as Pennsylvania legal requirements, professional ethics and business practices in massage therapy. In addition, students explore professional associations, research and continuing education opportunities to support ongoing professional development. Practice licensure examinations are completed, and students prepare their applications for the required state licensure examination. Students are required to purchase the “MBLEx Check” practice exam through the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) at their expense. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Integrate key concepts related to massage therapy assessment, contraindications, anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, professional ethics, business practices and client communication and other topics to effectively prepare for the MBLEx.
- Demonstrate effective professional communication skills necessary for building therapeutic relationships and conducting client assessments.
- Complete practice MBLEx licensure exams.
- Develop strategies for success on the MBLEx.
- Describe the steps and requirements for applying to the MBLEx exam.
- Explore the formal application process for the Pennsylvania Massage Therapist license, including knowledge of legal requirements and ethical standards.
- Evaluate resources for continuing education and professional associations that support lifelong learning as an LMT.
