MIS 102 - Medical Coding for Insurance Billing Credits: 4 3 Lecture Hours 3 Lab Hours
Prerequisites: ALH 140 and Acceptance into the MIS Program
Description This course presents students with a comprehensive study of diagnostic and procedural medical coding for insurance billing utilizing the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) classification systems. Students learn to apply these codes to medical insurance claims forms. In addition, the impact on proper reimbursement for health care services is emphasized. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Identify the content and arrangement of the major divisions of each volume of the International Classification of Disease (ICD) coding system.
- Interpret coding conventions and notations used in ICD.
- Analyze medical documentation to assign appropriate ICD codes for diagnoses.
- Apply coding principles of ICD to specific medical cases for adequate reimbursement.
- Appropriately apply Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) guidelines as they pertain to the six major divisions of the CPT coding manual.
- Apply CPT modifiers for maximal reimbursement when appropriate.
- Interpret abbreviations and symbols used in CPT.
- Capture Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes according to payer and circumstances.
- Select appropriate CPT and HCPCS codes for procedures and supplies.
- Apply coding principles of CPT to specific medical cases for adequate reimbursement.
