POL 206 - International Relations

Description
This course provides a historical overview and conceptual tools to understand international politics. Students explore the major contending theories of international relations and learn to apply them to contemporary problems in world politics. A special focus is given to U.S. foreign policy. This course further examines issues relating to war and strife, transnational terrorism, global peace and security, international political economy, international law, international organizations, globalization, ethnic nationalism and human rights.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Identify the origins and nature of the nation-state system.
  2. Compare and contrast different theoretical perspectives of international relations.
  3. Describe different models of foreign policy analysis.
  4. Explain the development and structure of the United Nations.
  5. Analyze international political landscape shaped by nationalism and globalization.
  6. Appraise global challenges including climate change, global health, war and terrorism.
  7. Examine international trade and political economy of different nations.
  8. Discuss factors influencing world order and global governance.
