SHM 103 - Basic Sheet Metal Fabrication Credits: 4 2 Lecture Hours 4 Lab Hours
Description This foundational course introduces students to the essentials of sheet metal shop operation. It focuses on safely and correctly using hand tools, rotary machines, power shears and roll-forming machines. The course emphasizes the practical application of sheet metal layout fundamentals in lab-based fabrication scenarios, preparing students for industry-standard operations. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Distinguish various sheet metal hand tools.
- Operate sheet metal fabrication tools and equipment safely.
- Construct seams using rotary and roll-forming machines.
- Perform hand-forming techniques for metal seaming.
- Detail the sequence of shop operations and their critical aspects.
- Develop patterns for metal elbows with precision.
- Compute geometric patterns for Ogee offsets in sheet metal.
- Generate miter and tee patterns employing parallel line development and hand tools.
- Create patterns for reducers and cones through radial development and triangulation.
- Design simple pyramids and transition pieces using triangulation.
- Assemble sheet metal products referencing provided sketches.
- Compile sheet metal fittings from shop drawings and materials.
