HIT 210 - Clinical Procedural Coding


Credits: 3

Prerequisites: BIO 103  or BIO 115  or BIO 161  and BIO 162 ; BIO 160  or BIO 241  

 
Description
In this course, students explore the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Procedure Coding System, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS II) and Common Procedural Terminology (CPT) classification systems. An introduction to revenue cycle management and healthcare reimbursement is included.  This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.


Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Apply diagnoses and procedure codes using the ICD coding system and procedure codes using the CPT/HCPCS II coding systems.
  2. Utilize current regulations and established guidelines in code assignments.
  3. Validate coding and sequencing accuracy using clinical information found in the health record.
  4. Resolve discrepancies between coded data and supporting documentation.
  5. Apply classification systems, methodologies and approaches to assess data to identify patterns, trends or differences.
  6. Apply policies and procedures to comply with the changing regulations among various payment systems for healthcare services.
  7. Evaluate code assignment for accurate reimbursement from payer sources.
  8. Explain the remittance advice and payment process for revenue cycle management.
