Description This course is designed to introduce students to the medical insurance billing profession. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and skills essential for completing insurance claim forms in the healthcare setting. Students focus attention on the various medical insurance plans offered by today’s healthcare payers. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of the Medical Insurance Specialist.
- Define medical insurance terms.
- Describe the development of the medical insurance industry.
- Differentiate between diagnostic and procedural coding and their relationship to insurance claims.
- Prepare accurate and complete insurance claim forms according to current insurance guidelines.
- Explain electronic claims submission and its importance in today’s insurance environment.
- Collect data from patient charts and distinguish between primary and secondary insurance plans.
