SOW 101 - Introduction to Social Work Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Prerequisites: CRE 103 and ENG 090
Description This course introduces students to the profession of social work, its historical roots, core values, ethics and diverse fields of practice. Emphasis is placed on the generalist intervention model, professional roles and the impact of systemic oppression and privilege. Students explore how social workers promote social, economic and environmental justice across micro, mezzo and macro systems. The course also fosters self-awareness and professional development through critical reflection, case studies and discussions on ethical practice, diversity and advocacy. Designed as a foundational course, SOW 101 prepares students for continued study in the field of social work and related helping professions.
CSWE Required Competencies
This course is designed in accordance with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). As an introductory course in the social work curriculum, SOW 101 addresses the foundational competencies required for accredited social work programs. The following competencies align with the course learning outcomes and prepare students for continued study and future licensure pathways:

- Explain how race, ethnicity, gender and other dimensions of diversity influence individual and community experiences. (CSWE Competency 3)
- Discuss how social work promotes human rights, social justice and advocacy at the micro, mezzo and macro levels. (CSWE Competencies 2, 5)
- Explore how ethical social work practice influences personal values, self-awareness and professional development. (CSWE Competencies 1, 3)
- Demonstrate basic professional communication skills used in social work practice. (CSWE Competency 1)
