SOW 150 - Cultural Competence and Diverse Populations

Prerequisites: CRE 103 , ENG 090  

 
Description
This course will provide students with the knowledge, values and skills of culturally-competent social work at the foundational level. Emphasis on advocacy, strengths and well-being of diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities will be explored.


Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Explain how race, ethnicity, gender and other intersecting identities influence social work practice and systems of power. (CSWE Competencies 2, 3, 5)
  2. Identify how cultural values and institutional structures may marginalize or empower individuals and communities. (CSWE Competencies 2, 3)
  3. Analyze historical and contemporary oppression, privilege and resistance patterns in the U.S. and globally. (CSWE Competencies 3, 5)
  4. Apply a strengths-based and person-in-environment lens to assess culturally responsive social work practice. (CSWE Competencies 6, 7, 8)
  5. Demonstrate awareness of personal bias and engage in reflective practices that promote cultural humility. (CSWE Competencies 1, 3)
  6. Evaluate the impact of inequitable access to housing, education, healthcare and justice on marginalized populations. (CSWE Competencies 2, 5)
  7. Describe the values, skills and knowledge required to engage in culturally competent, anti-oppressive social work. (CSWE Competencies 1, 2, 3)
