ATE 234 - Standard Transmission/Transaxle/Drivetrain Credits: 3 5 Skills Lab Hours
Prerequisites: ATE 103 or Instructor approval
Description This course introduces the student to the design, assembly, operation and diagnostic procedures for clutches, manual transmissions and transaxles, differential components and drive axle components. Drivetrain vibration analysis and noise correction are also discussed. Certain course sections are manufacturer-specific. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Analyze the components and function of a manual transmission or transaxle prior to disassembly and reassembly.
- Assemble the transmission or transaxle to operational specifications following analysis.
- Analyze the structure and operation of a differential assembly to reconstruct it to meet manufacturer specifications.
- Interpret technical data and apply mechanical skills to disassemble, inspect, and reassemble an all-wheel drive (AWD) transfer case.
- Diagnose drivetrain and all-wheel drive system issues using on-car testing procedures.
- Evaluate diagnostic results to determine appropriate repair strategies.
- Perform on-car diagnostic procedures to identify causes of noise and vibration in drivetrain systems.
- Recommend corrective actions based on diagnostic findings.
