MEC 131 - Makerspace Safety and Access Control

Description
This course introduces students to the safe use of tools, equipment and facilities in a makerspace environment. Emphasis is placed on safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) and machine-specific operating procedures. Students complete training modules on access control systems, proper workspace setup and emergency response. Upon successful completion, students earn clearance to independently access makerspace resources for project and course work.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Demonstrate proper use of PPE in a makerspace environment.
  2. Apply safe operating procedures for common makerspace tools and equipment.
  3. Describe access control systems and their role in ensuring a secure working environment.
  4. Identify emergency procedures and appropriate responses to common makerspace hazards.
  5. Create a presentation on the safe usage of makerspace equipment to bystanders and collaborators before beginning operation.
  6. Complete safety certification requirements to obtain independent makerspace access.
