ENG 250 - Creative Writing II, Experimental Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Prerequisites: ENG 105
Description This course is designed for the advanced creative writer. Students deepen their practice of craft and explore traditional and contemporary forms in creative nonfiction and poetry through both reading and writing. Students develop sophisticated skills in workshopping, offering and receiving substantive peer feedback to strengthen their own work and the work of others. Students also partner with The Phoenix literary magazine, engaging in the editorial process and contributing original work, to develop a fuller understanding of how creative writing lives in the world beyond the classroom. Learning Outcomes
- Apply advanced critical reading techniques to the analysis of published and unpublished creative nonfiction and poetry.
- Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the conventions and craft elements specific to creative nonfiction and poetry.
- Analyze technical devices and elements of craft in their own and their peers’ creative work through structured workshopping and feedback.
- Practice the editorial process by contributing to and collaborating with The Phoenix literary magazine as both writers and editors.
- Distinguish the qualities that define polished, literary-level creative work across the genres of creative nonfiction and poetry.
