ETH 126 - Race Ethnicity and Culture in American Sports, Experimental

Description
Sports have a significant impact in American culture and ethnic groups have historically played a prominent role in multiple ways. This course aims to explore the historical contexts and socio-cultural impacts of race, ethnicity, and racism in American sports including professional, Olympic, collegiate, high school and youth sports. Throughout the course we will study prominent sports figures from various ethnic groups and use their lives to help us explore the social, cultural, economic, and political structures that frame them.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Identify the social impact of ethnic groups in American Sports by examining various people and events in history.
  2. Analyze the economic impact ethnic group athletes have on the American and Global economy by creating surveys that depict the various ways revenue is generated.
  3. Differentiate generational facts and myths surrounding ethnic groups in sports by surveying various stories that have been passed on from generation to generation.
  4. Examine significant events, ideas, and figures in the history of American Sports and the experience of ethnic groups by producing written reports.
  5. Synthesize how categories of race, class, gender, sexuality, and other actors have been ideologically constructed through sports by group discussions.
