TTF 101 - Foundations of Tile and Terrazzo Finishing

Description
This course introduces students to the fundamental knowledge and practical skills used in tile and terrazzo finishing trades. Students learn workplace safety practices, hazard recognition and proper use of hand and power tools commonly used in finishing operations. The properties and handling of tile materials, terrazzo aggregates, mortars, grouts and bonding agents are covered along with the trade mathematics needed to calculate layout measurements and material quantities. Through classroom instruction and laboratory activities, students develop foundational competencies in substrate preparation, grout installation and introductory grinding and polishing procedures while applying safe work practices and industry workmanship standards.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course the student will:

  1. Identify hazards associated with tile and terrazzo finishing operations.
  2. Describe properties of tile materials, terrazzo aggregates, binders and finishing compounds.
  3. Calculate measurements and material quantities used in finishing applications.
  4. Demonstrate proper use of hand and power tools utilized in finishing trades.
  5. Perform basic substrate preparation and grout installation procedures.
