Description
This course builds upon the written music theory skills developed in Music Theory and Analysis 2. It covers chromatic elements found in music from the common practice period of Western music history. Coursework includes the study of tonicizations, modulations, sequences, modal mixture and other chromatic chords.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Discuss musical concepts using the standard terminology of the Western art music tradition.
- Distinguish between various types of musical sequences.
- Summarize the predominant techniques of modulation in Western art music.
- Analyze musical excerpts from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods that contain chromatic elements.
- Compose four-part chorales that contain chromatic elements.
