Description
This course examines African art/artifacts from a cultural perspective. Students will learn that these items were not meant as decoration: they are part of the secular and religious life of Africans. Students will also learn how African art led to the creation of the abstract art produced by European masters.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Students will be able to show how African art influenced European art and name two (2) European “masters” who utilized African art in their works.
- Students will be able to tell how African art is used in African societies. They will be able to compare and contrast the differences between so-called secular and religious art.
- Students will be able to explain the differences between European and African art.
- Students will be able to identify and discuss the art of two (2) difference African ethnic groups.
