DAN 120 - African Dance, Experimental Credits: 3 3 Studio Hours
Description This course will expose students to African culture by exploring the music and dance of the continent and the diaspora. The class will explore the music and dance from its inception to the modern adaptations that appear in today’s pop culture. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Identify common themes, forms and techniques used in African dance.
- Make use of the appropriate vocabulary to describe African dance and music.
- Demonstrate a variety of appropiate music and dance elements to create, improvise and perform original works.
- Identify the geographic region associated with a specific dance form.
- Recognize similar and different characteristics of African dance and American dance styles.
- Relate African dances and rhythms to historic events.
- Develop the ability to work cooperatively with classmates.
- Put to use feedback from instructor through observation and practice.
