Associate of Science

This University Parallel Program provides the foundations for successful transfer to a baccalaureate degree at a four-year college or university in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.  Students should select specialized courses that support and/or align with their intended program of study at their identified transfer institution.  Students are expected to meet with a transfer counselor to effectively design a plan for successful transfer to a four-year institution.  In order to complete the degree in mathematics and sciences, students must complete 18 credits of  coursework selected from the Information Technology, Mathematics and Science disciplines that are relevant for their chosen Major Field.

Major Field electives must align with a transfer plan.

Students should be aware that many upper level math and science electives require prerequisite courses that may not transfer as credit towards their four-year STEM baccalaureate degree.  Prerequisite courses support success in courses required at four-year baccalaureate colleges and institutions.  Such courses include but are not limited to: BIO 110 CHM 109 , CHM 110 , CHM 111 , CIT 111 , MAT 108 , MAT 147 .

Science Electives with a lab should be courses with a two-part sequence and students must take both parts.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will:

  1. Demonstrate written and oral communication skills necessary for transition to a four-year institution.
  2. Successfully complete academic tasks using digital technology, applications and collaboration tools relevant to their chosen STEM discipline.
  3. Describe the scope of their chosen STEM field and its core theories and practices using appropriate terminology.
  4. Analyze data using sound mathematical/scientific concepts.
  5. Explain how diverse perspectives affect interpretations of issues in politics, society and human relationships.
  6. Acquire and evaluate information through technological and traditional means as relevant to their chosen STEM discipline.

Degree Requirements

Total: 17–18 Credits

Total: 16–18 Credits

Total: 15–18 Credits

Fourth Semester

Total: 12–16 Credits

Minimum Credits to Graduate: 60–70

1 Students who begin their mathematics sequence at MAT 201  - Calculus 1 are exempt from taking MAT 142  - Pre-Calculus. Instead, students should continue with Mathematics courses that align with their transfer plan

2 Computer Information Technology electives must be numbered 100 or higher and selected in consultation with a transfer counselor and/or academic advisor

3 Humanities electives must be numbered 100 or higher and from the following disciplines: Art History and Studio Art (ART), American Sign Language and Culture (ASL), Dance (DAN), English Writing and Literature (ENG beyond the level of 102), Foreign Culture and Language (FCL), Journalism (JRN), Music Theory and Practice (MUS), Philosophy (PHL), Speech (SPH), or Theatre (THE).

4 Science electives with a lab must be numbered 100 or higher, four credits, upper level, within a sequence, and from the following disciplines: Biology (BIO), Chemistry (CHM), Physics (PHY)

5 The majority of STEM disciplines require Calculus at the Bachelor’s level, so students are encouraged to take MAT 147  - College Trigonometry as their second math elective in order to be prepared to take MAT 201  - Calculus 1. Students should consult with a transfer counselor and their preferred baccalaureate institution when choosing a course to fulfill this elective

6 Social Science electives must be numbered 100 or higher and from the following disciplines: Anthropology (ANT), Criminal Justice and Criminology (CJC), Early Education and Child Development (ECD), Economics (ECO), Ethnic and Diversity Studies (ETH), Geography (GEO), History (HIS), Homeland Security (HLS), Paralegal (PAL), Political Science (POL), Psychology (PSY), Sociology (SOC), Social Work (SOW).

7 Major Field and Math & Science electives should be selected in consultation with a transfer counselor and/or academic advisor and align with the student’s transfer plan.  Students must complete a minimum of 18 credits selected from Information Technology, Mathematics and Science disciplines.

8 Speech electives must be numbered 100 or higher. SPH 101  is recommended. Students should consult with a transfer counselor and their preferred baccalaureate institution when choosing a course to fulfill this elective

Transfer Opportunities

Articulation agreements are available for students to complete the Associate Degree and transfer to California University of Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania State University Commonwealth Campuses. It is important that students consult with a counselor early in their program to develop a course plan most appropriate for the school to which they intend to transfer. See www.ccac.edu/articulation for details.
