The Technical Theatre Certificate program provides hands-on training in the technical skills and safety practices needed for careers in scenic design and construction. Graduates learn foundational theatrical terminology and gain practical experience in scenic design, stage lighting design and operation, set construction techniques, stage rigging and various production roles. An emphasis is placed on safe tool operation and workplace protocols for building, loading in and running theatrical productions. Upon completion of the program, graduates develop a portfolio demonstrating their abilities in various technical disciplines and are prepared for entry-level crew positions in theater, film, television and event production.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will:

  1. Develop production materials like a Prompt Book, rehearsal schedule and execute scenic designs that support directorial concepts.
  2. Synthesize elements of design, drama and communication to construct scenery and flats appropriate for productions through collaboration with theater practitioners.
  3. Communicate effectively and apply design concepts by constructing both hard and soft theatrical flats to realize scenic designs.
  4. Stage manage productions through developing necessary materials, executing lighting designs and collaborating with theater crews to construct and mount scenery.
