Associate of Science

The Associate of Science in Theatre program provides graduates with a foundation in theatrical performance, production and analysis to facilitate successful transfer to a four-year theatre or creative arts program. Through hands-on experience in acting, voice and movement courses, graduates develop essential skills in script analysis, character development and live performance. Additional coursework introduces theatrical styles, genres and practices from a historical and cultural perspective.

Graduates gain practical experience through on-stage roles and backstage work on main stage productions. The program also emphasizes the collaborative process, with graduates working closely with directors and other theatre artists. Communication, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills are strengthened through production work and classroom study.

Upon completion of the program, graduates have a portfolio demonstrating their performance abilities as well as competencies in stagecraft. The broad foundation prepares them to either continue their education in four-year programs or pursue related careers in the performing arts industry. The associate degree also provides an option to directly enter the workforce with skills applicable to film, television and theatre performance or production roles.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will:

1. Define, analyze and apply theatrical forms, trends, scripts and characters from cultural, historical and textual perspectives for live performance.
2. Evaluate, synthesize and apply vocal, physical and psychological techniques to develop fully realized characters and performances.
3. Analyze, evaluate and synthesize components of scripts, directing and design to effectively portray characters and content in live productions.
4. Analyze, evaluate and apply production elements of professional theater through practical collaboration and observation of form and content.
