Associate of Science

This four-year Associate of Science degree program offers qualifying applicants occupational education within a structured academic framework. Qualifying applicants are those covered by Third Party Agreements with their International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Locals, apprentices in the process of becoming Journeymen Wiremen or Journeymen Wiremen who have already completed IBEW apprenticeship programs.

Students have classroom, hands-on and on-the-job experiences in Journeyman Wireman electrical work through their IBEW Local apprenticeship program. The curriculum supports the development of technical knowledge and related academic skills that are applicable to electrical installation, troubleshooting and coordination of work activities in commercial and industrial settings. Upon completion of the curriculum and the required job experience hours, students are eligible to take the IBEW Journeyman Wireman Examination.

Those who successfully complete the apprenticeship program and pass the examination receive proof of apprenticeship completion of an IBEW apprenticeship program. This proof allows graduates to work in residential, commercial and industrial construction as skilled Journeymen Wiremen and supports continued professional growth, including roles with increased responsibility, supervisory functions or further postsecondary study in related fields.

For Applicants in the IBEW Local 5 Jurisdiction

Enrollment is limited. Apprentices are under Third Party Agreement sponsorship of the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of the IBEW Local 5. Applicants must apply through the IBEW Local 5 application process. Applicants must meet the requirements outlined by the union available on the union’s apprenticeship website: (https://ibew5.org). Interested students can contact the IBEW Local 5 at (412) 432-1400 for more information.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will:

  1. Install electrical systems in residential, commercial and industrial settings in accordance with architectural plans, electrical codes and safety standards.
  2. Analyze electrical theory to troubleshoot and resolve electrical system problems.
  3. Explain scientific principles related to the nature of matter as they apply to electricity.
  4. Demonstrate technical skills required for employment in the residential, commercial, industrial construction and teledata industry.
  5. Apply classroom instruction and on-the-job training to meet IBEW and JATC Journeyman Wireman standards.
