Surgical Technologist Outcomes  

This program’s goal is to prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains. Graduates will be prepared to work under supervision in the operating room. The surgical technologist practices principles of asepsis while assisting the surgeon with surgical procedures. Responsibilities include preparation of equipment and supplies before, during and after surgery.

Graduates may take the National Surgical Technologist Certifying Examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Enrollment is limited by the availability of clinical sites and other factors. Students must make separate application to this program.

The Surgical Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs ((CAAHEP), 9355 113th Street, N #7709, Seminole, FL  33775; 727.210.2350, www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will:

  1. Incorporate knowledge of surgical instruments, technological skills and principles of aseptic technique into clinical practice as a competent entry-level surgical technologist (psychomotor and cognitive).
  2. Apply safe practices for patients, self and other members of the surgical team (psychomotor and cognitive).
  3. Explain anatomy and physiology as it relates to surgical procedures (cognitive).
  4. Demonstrate professional behavior through communication and ethical behavior when interacting with others in the clinical setting (affective).
