Description In this course, students examine the plant kingdom. The major plant divisions are studied with respect to their anatomy, physiology, life cycles, evolution and ecology. Additionally, plant biodiversity and medicinal uses are examined. A comparison of bacteria, algae, fungi and higher plants are explored. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Describe plant evolution emphasizing the relationship between green plants, bacteria, algae and fungi.
- Explain the life cycles of plants within the major divisions.
- Relate anatomical structures with their physiological functions.
- Summarize plant growth, reproduction and development including hormonal interactions.
- Generalize major modern DNA classification of plants.
- Identify plants used in medicine and local poisonous plants.
- Explain plant ecology including biodiversity, invasives and impact of climate change.
- Identify human uses of plants.
