BIO 156 - Molecular Genetics Laboratory

Credits: 2
4 Lab Hours

Prerequisites: BIO 151  OR BIO 207

Description
(Formerly BTC-202) This course introduces students to modern molecular genetics laboratory practices. Special topics include advanced molecular genetic methods used in nucleic acid analysis, genetic transformations, gene editing, DNA sequence interpretation and gene amplification.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Use agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to separate nucleic acids.
  2. Utilize restriction enzymes to cut DNA for DNA profiling and genetic disease detection.
  3. Perform Southern blotting analysis of DNA.
  4. Interpret DNA sequencing data.
  5. Apply the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify target DNA.
  6. Apply gene editing and genetic transformation techniques to bacteria.
Listed Topics
  1. DNA extraction and separation
  2. Restriction enzyme analysis
  3. PCR
  4. Southern blot analysis of DNA
  5. DNA sequencing analysis
  6. Bacterial cell transformation
  7. Gene editing by use of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)
