HPE 207 - Fundamentals of Exercise Physiology Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Prerequisites: HPE 201 or equivalent
Description In this course, students explore the basic principles of exercise physiology. Human responses and adaptations to exercise of varying levels of stress and intensity are examined. Students engage in discussions and hands-on experiments designed to demonstrate the physiological responses to physical activity. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Describe the primary difference between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism and their relative importance in exercise programs.
- Describe the structure of the skeletal muscle fiber and basic mechanism of contraction.
- Explain the physiologic basis of the major components of physical fitness: flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance and body composition.
- List the physiological adaptations of muscle metabolism and the cardiorespiratory system that occur at rest, during submaximal exercise and during maximal exercise following chronic aerobic training.
- Describe the response of the following variables to steady-state submaximal exercise and to maximal exercise: heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, pulmonary ventilation, respiratory rate, arteriovenous oxygen difference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean blood pressure.
- Describe the changes associated with chronic aerobic training for each of the following variables: heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, pulmonary ventilation, respiratory rate and arteriovenous oxygen difference.
- Analyze submaximal and maximal cardiorespiratory fitness field tests that use various exercise modes by explaining test protocols, collecting information from sample tests and interpreting key results.
- Analyze the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of various techniques used to assess body composition.
- Examine the physiological effects of various methods used to modify body composition.
