SPA 201 - Intermediate Spanish 1

Prerequisites: Completion of SPA 102  with a grade of C or better

 
Description
In this course, students build on the Spanish language skills developed in previous elementary levels. Students review essential grammar concepts from lower-level courses and are introduced to more complex grammatical structures. Throughout the course, students continue strengthening their listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in Spanish. A significant focus is placed on cultural learning, as students explore and expand their understanding of diverse Spanish-speaking cultures. The goal is for students to progress their communication proficiency and cultural knowledge. It is recommended that within one academic year of completing this course, students enroll in the next level Spanish course (SPA 202) to maintain and augment their skills at the intermediate level.


Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Integrate linguistic and cultural understanding of the Spanish language to effectively apply Spanish vocabulary, grammar, and cultural awareness in diverse situations.
  2. Translate level-appropriate material.
  3. Write detailed paragraphs in Spanish.
  4. Combine what has been learned in this course with what has been learned in the Elementary Spanish courses to develop a more distinguished way of speaking.
  5. Communicate at an intermediate level in Spanish.
  6. Use a mid to high-intermediate level vocabulary in and out of the classroom.
  7. Identify phonological and syntactical differences between Spanish and English grammar.
  8. Compare and contrast cultural differences among Spanish speaking countries and the United States.
