HIT 206 - Legal Aspects of Health Information Credits: 3 2 Lecture Hours 2 Lab Hours
Prerequisites: HIT 104
Description The course presents students with a comprehensive study of the legal aspects of health records and health information. Topics include an introduction to fundamentals of law and the U.S. legal system, health information laws and regulations, confidentiality, privacy and security concepts and release of information policies and procedures. Students also examine ethical issues in health information management. This course requires a per credit health career fee; Check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Evaluate ethical frameworks.
- Obtain authorization for the use of personal health information.
- Identify legislation and regulatory standards impacting health information management.
- Assess privacy and security risks.
- Conduct audits of health records to ensure compliance with legislation and accreditation standards.
- Differentiate between healthcare fraud and abuse.
- Validate legal documents.
- Identify reporting requirements associated with healthcare fraud.
- Apply exceptions to privacy legislation for required reporting.
