Description
This course builds upon the written music theory skills developed in Music Theory and Analysis 3. It covers a variety of techniques for analyzing music from the Baroque era to the present. The motives, phrases, themes and large-scale structures of compositions are analyzed with a focus on how all of these elements relate to each other and to the composition as a whole.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Demonstrate competency in musical analysis at multiple levels (i.e., motivic, phrase level and thematic).
- Employ multiple techniques for music analysis.
- Evaluate the appropriateness of various analytical techniques for specific musical tasks.
- Summarize the predominant musical forms of 18th and 19th-century art music.
- Describe 20th and 21st-century compositional techniques.
