PHL 111 - Religions of the World

Description
This course is a description of the origins, development, and manifestations of major world religions. Their similarities and differences are emphasized.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Describe the variety and details of belief systems of the major world religions.
  2. Identify the root terms common rituals and the socio-cultural histories of the major world religions.
  3. Discuss, through preparation by knowledge and comparisons, the variety of faiths and practices believed in the world’s majority.
  4. Develop critical analytical skills in reading, listening, writing and thinking.

  1. Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam
  2. Characteristic similarities that religions have in common
  3. Sectarian developments and differences
  4. Beginnings and rudiments of ancient and primal religious beliefs

In class and take-home exams may be used to determine grades. Faculty approved alternative projects are possible for grades also.
