PHL 111 - Religions of the World Credits: 3 3 Lecture Hours
Description This course is a description of the origins, development, and manifestations of major world religions. Their similarities and differences are emphasized. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Describe the variety and details of belief systems of the major world religions.
- Identify the root terms common rituals and the socio-cultural histories of the major world religions.
- Discuss, through preparation by knowledge and comparisons, the variety of faiths and practices believed in the world’s majority.
- Develop critical analytical skills in reading, listening, writing and thinking.

- Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam
- Characteristic similarities that religions have in common
- Sectarian developments and differences
- Beginnings and rudiments of ancient and primal religious beliefs
- Current international and cross-cultural changes in religions
Reference Materials Texts and anthologies of histories and scriptures of religions
Audio-video presentations to supplements texts
Lecture and discussion
In class and take-home exams may be used to determine grades. Faculty approved alternative projects are possible for grades also.
